INSIDE TECHNOLOGY

Site helps bring HDTV info into focus

After years of talk and hoopla, high-definition television may be about to take off as a mass-market product. At least that's the expectation of Mark Kersey, who has launched a Web site to help people shop for HDTV.

ChicagoHDTV.com is part of BuyingHDTV.com, the Solana Beach, Calif., company that Kersey heads.

"HDTV is a truly revolutionary technology," he said, "but all of the service and pricing options can be confusing, even for tech-savvy consumers."

The Consumer Electronics Association estimates that about 4.1 million digital TVs were sold last year and predicts a 50 percent increase this year, Kersey said.

The Web site offers detailed information about high-definition services available in the Chicago area from various sources that include cable, satellite and over-the-air broadcasting.

The site describes options and information about how much equipment costs. In many ways it resembles the numerous Web sites available to help consumers shop for wireless phones and long-distance service.
